Description
An account of the resource
Casa Pueblo, in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, never lost power during or after Hurricane María due to having self-sufficient resilient and renewable systems. Using solar energy, Casa Pueblo quickly became a center for relief and recovery efforts in the town of Adjuntas. Medical workers and local residents were able to continue to keep their medicines, such as insulin, refrigerated in miniature solar refrigerators such as the one pictured here, and also to provide a space and the energy to administer dialysis. As part of its relief and recovery efforts, Casa Pueblo has been able to acquire and install miniature solar refrigerators for medicines and foods throughout their community.

Through a generous donations from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds, Raíces was able to bring the next round of greens, herbs and flowers to be planted both in this greenhouse and around Plenitud’s permaculture farm.

While working on a service-learning project on Plenitud’s permaculture farm and education center, Tobias Knight of St. Thomas University in Minnesota takes a break to enjoy a ripe starfruit directly off the tree. Many fruit trees throughout the island were damaged and killed during the hurricane, and these were some of the first fruits that had formed and ripened since the storm, so they were a special treat. Thanks to the use of permaculture practices, Plenitud suffered a lower loss of fruit trees than conventional fruit farmers.

During the time Raíces crew members stayed at Plenitud PR’s permaculture farm and eco-learning center, a group of students from St. Thomas University in Minnesota was visiting on a service-learning trip. The Raíces crew arrived just as dinner was being prepared and after a short discussion with the students about sustainability, education, the future, Puerto Rico and Plenitud, the conversation continued while breaking bread.

Description
An account of the resource
One of the projects that stood out the most upon visiting Casa Pueblo was their mariposario, or butterfly house. The mariposario was home to dozens of native monarchs, endemic to the island of Puerto Rico. This is a sub-species of monarch that does not migrate off the island, but remains in Puerto Rico. Breeding these native monarchs is extremely important environmental work as they are important pollinators. This work became especially important post-Maria, as the insect population was severely affected by the hurricane, both by the winds and power of the storm, and by the lack of food available to them afterwards, with almost all vegetation on the island destroyed. This butterfly house also serves as an educational and demonstration site to share information and knowledge with the community as well as students of programs at Casa Pueblo.

Description
An account of the resource
Casa Pueblo de Adjuntas is an organization located in the Central Highlands of Puerto Rico, in a small municipality called Adjuntas. Casa Pueblo is a community-based, non-governmental organization that promotes, through voluntary participation of individuals and groups, protection of the environment and natural ecosystems. Through a diverse array of programs, Casa Pueblo carries out Its mission to explore, enjoy, and protect the wild places in Puerto Rico; to practice and promote the responsible use of the land's ecosystems and resources; and to educate and engage others to protect and restore the quality of the natural and human environment. Immediately after Hurricane María, Casa Pueblo became a sort of a crisis center. The community was able to gather there to charge electronics, access communications through satellite telephone, provide and receive medical services such as dialysis and the cooling of insulin, as the organization never lost power due to its own use of solar energy. In addition, Casa Pueblo distributed sustainable disaster relief supplies, such as water filters and solar lamps, and continued offering community and cultural programs in Adjuntas. It also took on the mission of transforming the energy crisis of Puerto Rico that began before the hurricane and reached a tipping point post-María using renewable energy, specifically solar.

Description
An account of the resource
“Raíces” painted on the Raritan River Art Walk by Albus Cavus founder and artist Peter Krsko at the 2010 Spring Jam, a collaborative community event that fused a variety of forms of art, culture, education and community. The Raritan River Art Walk was a public art walk/mural wall that existed in New Brunswick from 2007-2010. Over the time that this 1.2 mile wall functioned as a public art wall, the artwork that decorated it constantly evolved, being painted and repainted by hundreds of artists, both local and those who travelled to the area specifically to visit the art walk. Raíces Cultural Center collaborated on several events that incorporated the art walk, including Streets 2k10, Monster Jam and Spring Jam.
