Artist Reception: October 28, 6-10 PM

Raíces Cultural Center presents Día De Los Muertos: Ancestors and Art, an exhibition of artists' interpretations of the Day of the Dead and other cultural, family and personal traditions honoring the ancestors through art.

This exhibit aims to remove the social stigma of a celebration that typically seems macabre to outsiders by educating the viewer on how in Mexico and other parts of the world like the Caribbean, Africa and parts of Europe, death isn't viewed as the natural end of life, but one of the many phases in an infinite cycle. Life, death and resurrection are stages of a cosmic process which repeat themselves continuously. On the Día De Los Muertos the deceased have permission to visit with their loved ones and share the pleasures of the living, while in some Caribbean tradition the ancestors are honored honored on a daily basis. Simply put by Mexican writer, poet and diplomat Octavio Paz "The word death, is not pronounced in New York, in Paris, in London, because it burns the lips. The Mexican, in contrast, is familiar with death, jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it, it is one of his favorite toys and his most steadfast love."

The artists featured in this group exhibit have not only been challenged to use their creative visions to look at loss from a personal and cultural perspective but also to illustrate how we transmute this loss into a form of honoring our ancestors.

Come celebrate art with Raíces Cultural Center on October 28th at 6pm at the First Reformed Church of New Brunswick, 9 Bayard St., New Brunswick, NJ!
