On September 14, 2019, the Raíces crew went to check out the Segunda Quimbamba performance as part of Perth Amboy Artworks’ Live at the Ferry Slip Music Series. Segunda Quimbamba is a Jersey City-based percussion and dance ensemble founded by director Juan Cartagena and his wife Nanette Hernandez. Segunda Quimbamba performs and teaching about the Puerto Rican traditions of Bomba and Plena. It was great to see this expression of cultural art which originated on the island of Puerto Rico, but is also practiced throughout the diaspora. Of course, we couldn’t pass up the chance to document the music, song and dance to share with our community and the world, and help to preserve the music, art and culture, as it is practiced here in the diaspora. For more information on Segunda Quimbamba and their upcoming programs, classes, and events, check out their website at: http://segundaquimbamba.org/
