Raíces Launches New Creative Aging Initiative

by Nicole Wines

Thanks to our growing partnership with the Borough of Highland Park and the Highland Park Department of Aging and funding support from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, Raíces Cultural Center recently launched a new Creative Aging Initiative at the Highland Park Community Center. Our 2024 program includes two weekly Caribbean Drum, Song and Dance Class cycles in the Spring and Fall.

Our classes kicked off on April 9, 2024 at the Highland Park Community Center and have been well attended by members of the our local community who began the cycle by learning about the history and cultural significance of bomba, the instruments used in the genre, some of the basic steps and movements used in solo, community, and partner dance, and a couple of choruses to begin participating in the call and response style of bomba song.

This program is open to all and offered free of cost, please call 732-819-0052 to register.

The development of this program was made possible in 2024 by funds from the Creative Aging Initiative of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, a partner agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
