NICOLE WINES

Nicole was born into a house in which the walls resonated with music. She began to study with the late Chuck Sastre in the fourth grade on a flute loaned by a neighbor. She returned the borrowed instrument after only a year, but continued to take an interest in music, studying music theory throughout high school and picking out chords on a guitar left behind by another neighbor. Nicole decided to continue the study of music near the end of her studies at Rutgers University, when she enrolled in an Afro-Caribbean hand percussion course with Francisco G. Gómez and eventually joined his ensemble Raíces Caribeñas. Here music and art came off the pages of textbooks and became alive as a means to understand and preserve cultural heritage and history and make connections between cultures and across boundaries of age, gender and identity.

Nicole was honored to be invited to partner with her teacher, friend and fellow musician Francisco G. Gómez on the endeavor of building Raíces Cultural Center and is committed to the mission of preserving cultural roots through the arts. She has continued to study percussion, dance, bass and guitar and perform with the Raíces Cultural Center Ensemble, while administering Raíces, teaching classes and developing arts and cultural programming to share with the Central NJ community and beyond.

Nicole thanks all of her teachers, past and present, for their dedication, passion, talent and commitment to music, dance, arts and culture.
