Homemade organic adobo
Homemade organic adobo

Adobo is often used in Caribbean cooking, as well as many other Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese cuisines. It is super simple to make your own adobo seco, or dry adobo spice mix.

Why make it yourself instead of buying them pre-mixed? Simply put, store bought adobo often contains MSG, which is not healthy for your body and can actually harm it.  When you make it yourself you can control the ingredients used and the proportions in which they are mixed so you can tailor it to your own personal taste. We at Raíces use all organic herbs and spices from the bulk section of our local health food store which makes our homemade organic adobo comparable in price to the non-organic ones that come pre-mixed from the grocery store and definitely healthier for our bodies and the environment.  In the summertime, we can even include homegrown oregano, dehydrated garlic and dehydrated onions from our gardens, giving it an even more DIY touch!

There are many variations on the recipe for DIY adobo, we are just sharing the one that we use. Check out the links at the bottom for more information about adobo and for other variations of this spice mix so you can choose what works best for you. Jar it up, and enjoy! If you have adobo recipes of your own, please share them in the comment section, we would love to hear what works for you.
