A Good Food Rainbow

Check our new photo album, featuring just a little slice of the rainbow of good food we have harvested so far this summer as part of our Raíces Eco-Culture Micro Farm project.  It is all grown organically from organic seed. We are updating the album throughout the season, so check back for more photos!

We eat, the community members who help and support our programs eat, and we share with other organizations in our community, like Elijah’s Promise and A Better World Café.  We hope to acquire more land to cultivate, where we can build structures that will help us grow, care for and harvest food year-round and host cultural and educational programs and events for our community.

Spring peas. The last day of August, we planted a second crop, to harvest in the fall.
Strawberry
Strawberry
Home grown strawberries are healthier and travel a lot less of a distance than store-bought. It takes 435 fossil-fuel calories to fly a 5 calorie strawberry from California to New York. Fruits and veggies lose nutrients and vitamins every minute after they are harvested. We are expanding from one strawberry patch this year to four next year, hoping to grow enough strawberries to share with our friends and neighbors.
Beanlandia
Beanlandia
Our red kidney beans bounced back from nothing but stumps so nicely after the groundhog attacks. Thanks to everyone to helped us get a fence in on time. The groundhogs try to get in every day. Sometimes we catch them sitting outside the fence staring in. But we think and hope our bean crop will remain safe after this tremendous recovery!

Not part of our harvest, but too colorful to pass up. These purple peppers must be super spicy, because they are abundant in our neighbor's unfenced plot, where the groundhogs never even attempt to taste them.
